Turn a JSON array into JSON Lines (also called JSONL or NDJSON): each item is written compact, on its own line, with no brackets around the file and no commas between lines. That's the format BigQuery loads, log tools read and machine learning datasets use. Strings and numbers stay exactly as written. JSON Lines to JSON goes back, and the JSON Lines Viewer shows the lines as a table.
How to use it
- Paste a JSON array or open a .json file.
- The JSON Lines appear as you type, one item per line.
- Copy them or download a .jsonl file.
Private, and made for big files
This tool runs in your browser, in a background worker: nothing you paste or open is uploaded, and nothing is kept after you leave. JSON and XML input can be up to 1 GB, depending on available memory. Processing runs in a background worker; large analyses can take a minute or more. Already loaded features keep working if your connection drops. Loading another tool or jq for the first time needs a connection. When one tool isn't enough, GigaJSON opens your data with a tree, a table, JSONPath/JMESPath/jq queries, transforms, diff and history.
Questions
What if my JSON is an object, not a list?
It's written as one line, which is valid JSON Lines with one record. If the records are in a list inside the object, such as {"users": [...]}, paste just that list.
Is JSONL the same as NDJSON?
Yes. JSON Lines, JSONL and NDJSON (newline-delimited JSON) are names for the same format: one JSON value per line. .jsonl is the usual file extension.
How do I do this on the command line?
With jq: jq -c '.[]' data.json > data.jsonl. The -c writes each item on one line; without it the output isn't JSON Lines.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The tool runs in your browser, in a background worker. Nothing you paste or open goes to a server, and nothing is kept after you leave the page.
How large a file can it handle?
JSON and XML input can be up to 1 GB, depending on memory. CSV/YAML input and JSON repair are limited to 128 MB. Conversion runs in a background worker. jq, text editing and text-based exports have separate limits, shown when you use them.
